Values and how they can bite you in the ass

They’re deep in discussion and one of them is sharing something big and personal. What he’d believed for the longest time isn’t true.

Although he’s come far in life, he’s not where he thought he would be.

It’s like his focus had been fuzzy and now he can see things with brilliant clarity.

And it’s liberating. But shocking. And he’s crestfallen.

So goes a scene with Abe Wiseman, in the penultimate episode of “The Marvellous Mrs Maisel.”

Abe, Midge Maisel’s father, slows down his usual running dialogue delivered at the pace of a waterfall in the rainy season.

And we see the scales fall from his eyes.

As he sees his daughter.

Really sees his daughter.

And in doing that he realises that he has beliefs and values that no longer work.

Beliefs and values can be tricky buggers.

They’re a big part of us.

But sometimes we outgrow them.

They no longer serve us.

And when we realise that, opportunity opens up.

Change.

A new way forward.

What beliefs and values are you still holding onto that aren’t serving you any more?

P.S. If you’ve not come across the mischievous, magical world of Mrs Maisel, give yourself a treat. The dialogue is as invigorating as sparkling water on a hot day. The colourful clothes and sets are gobsmackingly gorgeous (the first season starts in 1958) and its main characters are women who are pioneers and don’t take any crap.
