Lessons from Alcatraz in setting yourself up for communication success

Believing good food encourages good behaviour meant that these luxuries could be enjoyed:

  • Cream of celery soup

  • Roast turkey

  • Ripe olives

  • Asparagus tips on toast

  • Pumpkin pie

  • Walnut layer cake

Kinda fancy, yes?

And you might be thinking, well sure, it’s a restaurant.

Or a hotel.

Or maybe a cafe.

Would it surprise you that this food was served in Alcatraz Prison?

And that it was being served to inmates rather than guests?

By all accounts food was a better quality than other prisons, with daily meals averaging around 3000 calories.

This was compared to 2000 in most others.

The 260 prisoners had 20 minutes to eat as much as they wanted to, as long as they didn’t leave anything on their plates.

Those who did lost privileges.

When we put a system in place we can support ourselves.

With levers to encourage and restrain.

To give us treats and discipline.

Freedom and boundaries.
