How to introduce yourself so that people's eyes don't glaze over

Looking for a way to introduce yourself?  That won’t have people plastering a polite but not interested smile on their face? And instead instantly start to build rapport and connection?

Here’s how.

Chances are when you give a presentation at an event, you’ve got something prepared for how to introduce yourself to your audience.

Do you have this kind of introduction for other audiences?

When I work with leaders, I’m often amazed at how few of them have a prepared “This is me” introduction.

And I mean an introduction that's beyond a commentary of their career to date.

The tendency can be to bash on, get down to business and start addressing an agenda.

But you're missing a golden opportunity if you just dive straight into the business stuff.

The image below is how I introduced myself recently at a workshop on how to communicate with stakeholders.

It shared some personal stuff about me:

  • I drink lots of tea. My kitchen is home to 29 different kinds!

  • I colour in to chill out - C.C.I. is for Chief Colourer Inner.

  • And I used to live in The Land of Fire and Ice just a tad south of the arctic circle.

This way the people I was working with knew more about me than my professional credentials.

Don’t get me wrong.

Professional credentials are important.

But people are talking and working with me, and so knowing me helps build connection.
