The one question to ask to make a splash in your sparkling career
It takes 1.6 seconds and reaches a speed of 48 kmh. And it takes a huge impact on the wrists.
What am I talking about?
The 10 metre Olympic dives I’ve been mesmerised by.
It’s quite something to look down from that height never mind dive from it.
And it’s something else when the diver goes to the very edge of the board, turns around, stands on their hands, goes into a full handstand, and then pushes themselves into the air, twisting and turning as they speed towards the water.
At The Paris Olympics when I’ve not been watching diving, it’s been the swimming, then the sailing and recently the artistic swimming.
Find ways to support yourself and your career
Water.
To me water is relaxing. It slows my mind down. Yet it opens it up. Gives my creativity a boost.
I breathe easier.
Maybe it’s the positive effective of the negative ions.
The feeling of freedom I get from being around water.
The sight of it sparkling under lights or the sun.
How I feel when I swim 3 times a week.
Whatever it is, it works, and it helps me manage my energy.
What supports your energy?
When I work with my clients we look at their energy.
What gives them energy, what takes it away, what refuels them and what calms them.
When you have a clearer idea of what helps and what hinders your energy you’re more in charge of it rather than the ebbing and flowing of energy being in charge of you.
And when you can control your energy more, you’re more grounded and centred.
You have balance rather than boom and bust.
Your pacing is steady rather than sprinting and crashing.
Your workload is manageable rather than manic and frenzied.
All of this is important because our energy supports us with the communication skills we need to shine.
Solid communication skills support a solid career
And good, solid communication skills do make us shine.
They let us lead on that project.
They earn us trust.
They get us that promotion.
And we get a stellar reputation for knowing how to use our words well in the workplace.
It might be hosting a question and answer session with colleagues. Or leading the team through a challenging time.
It might be having 1-1 conversations that make a difference and strengthen connection. Or talking to a brand new group of colleagues and starting to build rapport.
It might be standing on a stage with confidence, humility, and humour. Or it could be talking to the boss’s boss for the very first time and leaving a lasting, positive impression.
So, the question you can ask yourself to make a splash and a sparkling career is this - “What supports your energy?”
And then build a plan to include that in a systematic way, so that you can create the change and growth you want. And enjoy the benefits that it brings to you.

P.S. 10 metre dives are optional.
